How to Recover Files Hidden by Virus
These days every one of us carry a pen drive with us .We all need to access those data on computers other than of our own. A big issue with such is the virus that corrupts our data. As many of us wondered what actually is the virus doing with my data, why does it hide all my content, and how to recover those files hidden by virus. We have a very simple way to get all your data back within a few seconds, all you need is a computer with an antivirus or a Linux live CD and nothing at all, and I mean it.
Basically when a virus program gets into your drive it hides every folder and creates a exe file in that name. We click on those virus applications instead of the folders, so they could run and infect other available drives. Folders will not have any extensions instead virus programs with the folder names will have “.exe “extensions. Change the folder view to details, If it is a folder then the file type will be “File Folder”, if it’s a virus It will show “Application”. The image below explains it.
When you have accidentally connected your pen drive in some local internet café and found all the files are gone or converted into shortcuts, don’t be panic. Make sure that the pen drive was not formatted. To verify that go to the pen drive properties, it should show 2 GB free of 4 GB ( just an approximate value, occupied size is the size of the data in that drive) which confirms that still you have 2 GB of data in that drive.
Scan your pen drive with any antivirus program; it will remove the entire virus. But the data will not be shown yet.
Open up your flash drive, Go to organize -> Folder options -> view. Select show hidden files, if you could see your content than copy it somewhere else. If nothing shows up, than unchecked Hide Protected Operating System Files and press yes.
Now the entire folder will be shown but with read only permission. That means you cannot move or rename the folder, but you can move what is inside the folders. Create folders with same names in your computer and copy all the contents from the flash drive to the folders you have created.
Finally format the flash drive and move the contents you have copied.
If you don’t have an updated antivirus. Boot into any Linux Live CD and connect your pen drive. Because most Linux is immune to exe viruses, so everything will be shown as data (Even the virus program). Copy all the files you need to your computer excluding the exe files with same size. Format the pen drive and move your files back.
There are also other methods to recover the files hidden by virus, I hope it helps and be done without have to download any software.
